Welcome to our comprehensive course on Diabetes Management in Developmental Services. This training is designed for developmental services staff, including nurses, developmental service workers, and personal support workers. It provides the essential knowledge and skills needed to support individuals living with diabetes, with a focus on safe practices that promote health, independence, and well-being.

Through clear explanations and practical guidance, you will learn about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the methods used to diagnose the condition, and the potential complications that can occur when diabetes is not well managed. The course also covers treatment options, lifestyle considerations, and best practices for assisting individuals with personalized management plans. In addition, you will gain the knowledge to safely measure and record blood glucose levels and support the administration of diabetes-related medications.

By the end of this course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to assist individuals with diabetes safely and effectively, helping to reduce risks, improve outcomes, and enhance quality of life.

Optional Add-On Modules

Insulin Injection Lab Module
This optional hands-on module provides practical training in safe insulin administration. Participants will practice proper injection techniques and learn how to support individuals who require insulin as part of their diabetes management plan.

Ozempic Module
This module introduces GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Ozempic. Participants will gain an understanding of how these medications work, their role in diabetes management, and important considerations when supporting individuals prescribed Ozempic.

Dexcom Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Module
This module focuses on continuous glucose monitoring using Dexcom technology. Participants will learn how to set up, monitor, and interpret data from Dexcom devices, ensuring safe and effective support for individuals using CGM systems.

Freestyle Libre Module
This module provides practical guidance on supporting clients who use the Freestyle Libre glucose monitoring system. Participants will learn how the device works, how to scan and track readings, and how to assist individuals in incorporating this technology into their diabetes care plan.
